Day 12: Zombie

George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead were groundbreaking films and began the wave of zombie movies and television series for decades to come. The Italian film industry looked to capitalize on their successes by putting out their own zombie genre films passing them off as their own or sequels to the originals. While some are blatant rip offs taking the same setting and elements of Romero’s films, there was one Italian zombie film that stood out and is considered in it’s own right a great horror movie.

Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (known internationally as Zombi 2) is an incredible work of art. It takes the zombie concept spearheaded by Romero and goes further by tracing its roots. Fulci encompasses elements of voodoo to explain the rise in the undead.

Fucli’s masterpiece contains some of the most daring and gory scenes I’ve seen in a horror movie. The makeup designs of the zombies are frightening with its decaying skin, razor sharp teeth and worms coming out of eyes and mouths. Horror fans will drool over the action sequence where a zombie that is underwater is battling a shark in which they trade bites. Nothing like that has been shown in a film of this subject matter before and it shows that the zombies can go after creatures other than humans. The plot of the movie is easy to follow. The gritty but beautiful cinematography and a synthesizer led musical score put the finishing touches on this great film.

This film is Lucio Fucli’s best work and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you do. You will appreciate this film for all that it delivers.
